Meditation is a tricky practice. Or at least that’s how it seems to be when you’re starting.
No matter what kind of meditation you try, no matter if you have a western meditation trainer or a monk from the Himalayas as your trainer — they will tell you the same thing — sit there, be there, and don’t try.
Well, eventually, that’s the first lesson you might learn — don’t try.
But as you grow your meditation practice, you will realize how tricky it can be. If we are not aware of where we are heading, we might actually miss the whole point of meditation.
Here are 6 signs you are doing meditation the wrong way —
You are chasing a time.
It could get really lofty seeing people meditating for hours and wanting to do the same.
Sure, you need to enter the beta-waves zone of your mind to get all the benefits from your meditation session.
Chasing a number will only distract you from being in the moment.
But if you’re beating yourself up for not meditating X minutes in a session, that’s definitely a wrong way of doing your meditation.
You are trying to relive a memory.
Alright, I am guilty of this.
In September ‘18, when I was recovering from my breakup, I used to meditate for 1 hour twice a day. I was trying my best to calm down my anxious and painful suffering.
6 months ago, when I decided to make my meditation practice regular, I was trying so hard to relive that memory of having 1hr meditation sessions.
Holding on to your past will only distract you from being in the moment.
Are you trying to relive a memory in your meditation sessions? If you are, that’s definitely a sign that you are doing meditation the wrong way.
You are expecting a magical experience after your session.
Sure, there might be some sessions when you might witness something surreal and magical.
But expectations hurt. Sitting in a meditation session with a result-based expectation is a sure shot way to distract yourself from being present in the moment.
A healthier way of tackling this is to focus on the process. The process of meditation is sitting relaxed and letting go of your thoughts.
Expectations of certain results will definitely arise. But like all the other desires and thoughts, you have to learn how to let it go.
You are not feeling calm throughout the day.
This doesn’t mean if you come and slap me, I must still feel calm. No, that’s a different case.
Being calm throughout the day will mean increasing your response time — to think before responding.
When your meditation practice is going well, you will notice you talk less.
Even in moments of stress, you will notice yourself staying calm and composed. This directly impacts your business and personal life.
You are not kind and compassionate to others.
If someone comes to you and tells you, “I wish you were more kind and compassionate to others,” take it seriously.
Think objectively and check if the person telling you this has your best intentions at heart.
If your meditation practice isn’t making you kind and compassionate, you’re not doing your meditation in the right way.
Meditation offers us space and stillness in between our responses, and during those moments of stillness, we can see the situation of others too.
That’s how you develop kindness and compassion with meditation.
You are not evolving emotionally.
If you are standing still in one place regarding your emotions, if your meditation isn’t evolving you emotionally, you are doing something wrong in your meditation.
Meditation offers you a better understanding of your emotions. In moments of stillness, you can listen to your inner voice, and that’s how you evolve emotionally — listening to your inner voice.
